Using the COM/IP Control Panel
There are three ways to get to the Control Panel: In the COM/IP program group in the Windows Start Menu, click the Control Panel shortcut; or in the Windows System Tray, right-click the COM/IP icon and click the Configure command; or in the Windows Control Panel, open the COM/IP applet.
If the COM/IP Redirector has been installed with the Administrator Only Mode feature, then the COM/IP Control Panel will only be available to users with Administrator privileges.
To configure a virtual COM port, select a virtual COM port from the list at the left, and then change the Init String, if needed. Changes will be recorded within two seconds, with no further action. To apply the settings of the current virtual COM port to other ports, click Copy Settings To, and then select the ports to receive the settings.
Advanced Options
To configure Advanced Options for all COM ports, open the COM/IP Control Panel, and click Advanced. In the Advanced Settings window, select the Options tab, and then change the settings.
Changed settings will not affect the operation of currently active virtual COM ports. See the Advanced Options section for further details.
Select Ports
The Select Ports command will display a window that allows viewing and changing of the COM/IP COM ports.
To add or remove virtual COM ports in the COM/IP Control Panel, click Select Ports. Change the installed virtual COM ports by selecting and clearing checkboxes. The corresponding COM port ranges will appear in the lower panel.
Alternatively, the COM port ranges may be edited directly. Use individual COM port numbers (such as 4, 5, 7) and/or ranges (such as 11-18, 30-53), separated by commas. When editing the COM port ranges, the checkboxes in the upper panel will change accordingly. Click OK when finished. If any of the selected ports do not have an associated Windows modem device, then a window will appear with instructions for adding modem devices.
When the redirector is first installed, at least one virtual COM port must be selected. Virtual COM ports may be added and removed, but at least one port must remain selected.
The list of available COM ports will not include COM ports for local hardware, nor any virtual COM ports created by other applications (such as printers and Bluetooth devices).
If the same virtual COM port is removed and later created again, then the settings of the previously removed virtual COM port will be applied.
The Init String
The Init String is used to initialize COM/IP when the COM port is opened, after every modem reset (AT&F or ATZ) command, and before COM/IP processes commands from the client program. Usually, this string is used to set COM/IP S-register values. The Init String will be delivered to a modem emulator, and it will take the form of a modem command string, such as ATS1001=2S1002=1. COM/IP will respond to basic AT commands and two sets of S-registers: Hayes-compatible standard S-registers and COM/IP S-registers.
This setting is provided for cases in which the Windows application can not be configured to issue the proper AT commands.
Init String Examples
An older application that is receiving connections may need a string such as: ATS1001=1S1002=1S1003=7S1005=0S1008=23&D2
Some file transfer protocols, such as ZMODEM, will need to use binary mode: ATS1002=1
An application may need to have COM/IP start a connection to a fixed destination when a COM port is opened. An Init String can be used to "dial" the destination's TCP/IP address and port number as follows: ATDT123.321.123.321[6000]
Licensing
The Licensing button will allow editing of the license key.
To change the license key, in the COM/IP Control Panel, click Licensing. In the Licensing window, edit the License Key field, and then click Update.
The Name and Organization fields are optional, and are not related to the license key in any way.
License keys are issued in the format: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
Upper and lower case letters are equivalent, and the dashes may be omitted.
If a license key is not being accepted when it is entered, then verify that the license key is being typed in correctly, and that it is for the major version of the software being installed. For example, a version 3.x license key can not be used to install version 4.x software. Also, if the Windows registry has restricted access, then Administrator rights may be required to enter in the license key.
If the license key that is being used conflicts with one that is being used on another computer, then a window will be displayed containing information about the conflicting license key. Neither COM/IP installation will work until the conflict is resolved.
